This section provides reference information for the 6-speed direct-shift gearbox DQ250 (02E).

Transmission

The DQ250 (02E) robotic gearbox has a brilliant engineering feature that often confuses readers: it has two output shafts and, accordingly, two Final Drives.

  • Output Shaft 1 serves 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.

  • Output Shaft 2 serves 5th, 6th, and Reverse (R) gears.

Because of this, the physical 4th and 5th gears have nearly identical gear ratios, but the final drive ratio at the wheels differs due to the change of output shafts.

Interesting fact: gear ratios for heavy atmospheric VR6 (3.2 R32 / 3.6 FSI) and high-torque 4-cylinder diesels (2.0 TDI) are often absolutely identical. Both engine types possess immense low-end torque and do not require high RPMs, so they are fitted with “long” gears. Conversely, for 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engines (2.0 TSI/TFSI), the ratios are “shorter” to keep the turbine in its optimal boost range.

How it works in practice

If you look at the TSI column, you will notice that the 5th gear ratio (1.094) is greater than the 4th (1.078). It seems as though RPMs should increase rather than drop upon upshifting. However, at this moment, the mechatronics unit switches the clutch from Shaft 1 to Shaft 2.

Final Gear Ratio (Gear × Final Drive):

  • In 4th gear (Shaft 1): 1.078 × 4.059 = 4.37 (crankshaft rotates 4.37 times per wheel revolution).

  • In 5th gear (Shaft 2): 1.094 × 3.136 = 3.43 (crankshaft rotates 3.43 times per wheel revolution).

Modification Codes

The codes KCW, KCZ, KDA, LRF, LRG, LRK, HYA, JFP, JPZ are three-letter modification codes for the DQ250 (02E). Most of these are All-Wheel Drive (4Motion / Quattro) versions for PQ35/46 platforms, along with specific Front-Wheel Drive revisions.

  1. Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) versions
    • KCW: Fitted to 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI (e.g., BKD engines). Features a long “diesel” gear set.

    • KCZ and KDA: Classic FWD gearboxes for 2.0 TFSI (AXX, BWA engines) with 200 hp (Golf 5 GTI, Audi A3, TT). Use the “short” petrol gear set.

  2. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for turbo petrol (2.0 TFSI)
    • LRG: AWD version for 2.0 TFSI Quattro / 4Motion.

    • LRK: Reinforced AWD gearbox for Audi S3 and Audi TTS (CDLB, BHZ engines, 265–272 hp). Software optimized for 350 Nm torque.

  3. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for Diesel (2.0 TDI)
    • LRF and JPZ: AWD gearboxes for 2.0 TDI 4Motion / Quattro.

  4. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) for heavy VR6 (3.2 L)
    • HYA and JFP: Specific gearboxes for naturally aspirated 3.2 V6 flagships. Long gear set similar to diesel versions. Feature a different bellhousing, incompatible with inline engines!

There is no need to seek unique gear tables for each of these 9 codes; instead, focus on the engine type (petrol or diesel) and drive type.

The 1st generation is divided into three series — C, E, and F:

  • Series C (black): 02E927770AD, 02E927770AE (Motorola processor).

  • Series E (white): 02E927770AJ (Infineon Tricore processor, 2009).

  • Series F (white): 02E927770AM, 02E927770AL (Infineon Tricore TC1766 processor, 2010–2014).

Note

Recommended choice for tuning: Series F (02E927770AM or 02E927770AL). They feature a more modern processor, are more reliable, and have no immobilizer binding.

Identifying the Version

The mechatronics version can be identified by its Hardware Number. This is the only reliable method.

  1. Diagnostic Scanner (OBD2): In the Transmission control unit (address 02), read the “Part No.” or “Hardware Number” parameter.

  2. Visual Inspection: Look for a label on the housing with a number starting with 02E… or 0D9….

Shifter (selector) part numbers for PQ35 and PQ46 platforms.

Important

A shifter from a standard torque-converter automatic (e.g., Aisin 09G) is not suitable for DSG because they use different communication logic and a different electronic board (J587).
